Festive Greetings from Islands & Rivers

Islands & Rivers have been creative in this festive period and want to share a little film we made for all of you!

Raising Gingerbread House of Islands and Rivers 2012

It took a lot of sweat, burnt sugar and festive music but I hope you are as happy as we are with the result. If we were
to begin our own cult this is where we would hold our meetings all year round!

We have had a wonderful 1st year of both busy and contemplative moments and look forward to some very exciting projects in
2013.

So we will raise a glass to each of you on this fine festive day.

Bird is the word!

Well, another few weeks have passed and finally the rain has stopped and the sun is out! Liberty’s garden looks like it has been hit with a paint shop it is so full of colour and down by Sophie’s boat on the River Thames just looks dreamy. (Still probably don’t want to venture in it though!)

<<< A LOVELY LISTEN, FREE PODCAST >>>

Liberty was recently recorded telling the tale of how the Murmuration film came into being as part of a fantastic RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) podcast, and how it felt to be so close to something so incredible. There is also a scientist talking about the rapid starling decline which has been baffling researchers for the past few years… it is really interesting stuff and we hope you enjoy it, here is the link:

Episode 58 http://www.rspb.org.uk/podcasts/naturesvoice.aspx

<<< NATURE'S VOICE >>>

The RSPB is a wonderful organisation, which works tirelessly to protect birds and their habitat, as well as educate the public and fund research into birds and their habitats. This is why Liberty and Sophie decided to nominate them as the charity to which 10% of their Murmuration DVD sales go to, and make a short film with them as part of the Murmuration DVD package. They truly are a passionate, knowledgeable and fun charity, and we encourage you to have a look at their website (after you’ve listened to the podcast!) http://www.rspb.org.uk

Love nature? You’ll love Nature’s Voice, the RSPB’s award-winning podcasts. Each month they’ll bring you features, interviews and news of birds and wildlife, from back gardens to the Sumatran rainforest. If you can’t get enough, try dipping into their back catalogue. They’ll take you soaring with birds of prey, look back over 30 years of Big Garden Birdwatch, offer wildlife gardening advice and hear from celebrity wildlife lovers like Bill Oddie and Kate Humble. To make sure you get each new edition as soon as it’s published, why not become a subscriber? It’s free and simple!

The RSPB podcasts are a great example of the wonderful free and shared knowledge that is available via the internet, just like the TED Talks in a previous blog post. We are keen to promote the collaborative, co-operative and free ethos that is behind ideas such as these; if you have any other fab examples, do let us know

Perhaps send them in on a postcard – in the ‘Inspire Us’ section of this website!

With love, Liberty & Sophie xx

Sophie’s TED Weekend

We Love Learning!

Hi Friends,

Sophie has been working with the TED team as part of the TED Talent Search in 14 cities around the world. Confirmed events will take place in Amsterdam, Bangalore, Doha, Johannesburg, London, Nairobi, New York, São Paulo, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Tokyo, Tunis and Vancouver. For the TED2013 Talks, which takes place in Long Beach, California, half the speakers will be selected through this process.

The event took place at the British Library, London, exactly this time last weekend. And what an incredible opportunity! Wow, I was so impressed with all the incredible speakers. My job entails knowing each talk intimately which meant I was lucky enough to hear each more than once and really get to know the subject matter which was always fascinating, inspiring and each individual so unique. I had a wonderful experience working with the TED team who are all vibrant and passionate, so important when providing a platform for disseminating new ideas. If you haven’t hear about TED Talks before then you are in for such a treat. Nothing in the world is like this organisation and the progressive nature of its intentions and its free to watch online! Here is the website: www.ted.com

This is the second time I have had the privilege of working on one of these events and can’t wait for the next one! And to top it all off they asked to play Murmuration! What a honour!

Here is the link to the for the TED Talent Search: http://conferences.ted.com/TED2013/auditions/

And who knows, maybe one of you reading this has a wonderful TED Talk inside you!

Here is one of my favourite talks:

I heart Islands & Rivers

Hello Friends,

We have begun the year full of vim and vigour. 2012 looks to be a fantastic year and we hope it is the same for you. Sophie went to North Norway and attended the the amazing Sami festival and then travelled with Inga and Ula, traditional reindeer herders. Finally we stood amazed under the Northern Lights.

Meanwhile, back in London, Liberty finished a short film called Love Locks – just in time for Valentine’s Day. Click on the link to take a look!

Happy Valentine’s from us to you…

Passion makes the old medicine new:
Passion lops off the bough of weariness.
Passion is the elixir that renews:
how can there be weariness when passion is present?
Oh, don’t sigh heavily from fatigue:
seek passion, seek passion, seek passion!

“Passion makes the old medicine new” Rumi

With love, Liberty & Sophie xx

Dreamers of Dreams

“Dreamers of Dreams” explores the unconscious dreams of a group of London teenagers.Sophie received funding in early 2011 from the London Borough Film Fund to make this experimental documentary in collaboration with a very talented group of students from Westminster Kingsway College and the ever wonderful House of Fairy Tales.

This was a brave move for the funders and we are very appreciative that they gave us this opportunity.

Norway

Sophie and our esteemed director of photography, Nicholas Canfield, travelled to the Arctic Circle in search of lights, the Sami People and reindeer racing! Our trip began in Tromso and ended in the far reaches of Whale Island. It was a great success and we are thrilled with our footage.

We are putting together a taster for you all to see very soon. We plan to return to Norway later this year and follow a particular family of Sami People. We are very excited by this project and we hope you will be too. It combines our two favourite things – wonderful people and epic nature.

Festive Greetings from Islands & Rivers

What an amazing end to 2011.
